1 Stat That Makes Amazon Hard to Ignore Right Now

Amazon's AWS backlog jumped to $496 billion as of Q2 2026, up from $364 billion the prior quarter. That is a $132 billion sequential increase, roughly 36%, and it puts a hard number on AI-driven demand for AMZN's cloud business.

AWS also posted its fastest revenue growth in 18 quarters. The backlog represents contracted customer commitments, so the quarter's growth acceleration and the backlog surge point in the same direction: AI workloads are translating into signed business.

The risk sits in concentration. Major AI labs, including Anthropic and OpenAI, signed deals worth $100 billion with AWS. The source flags that revenue from those deals may land significantly below those labs' spending plans. My interpretation: a meaningful slice of the $496 billion could depend on a small group of counterparties, so the headline backlog figure may overstate how much converts to recognized revenue, and on what timeline.

The setup is a growth-versus-quality debate. Bulls point to the 18-quarter growth high and the backlog expansion. Bears point to customer concentration and the gap between announced deal values and expected revenue.
