AbbVie Is Already a Dividend King. Here's Why the $10.9 Billion Apogee Deal Could Make It a Dynasty
AbbVie (ABBV) is acquiring Apogee Therapeutics for $10.9 billion, adding late-stage pipeline assets as the company works to offset revenue declines from Humira's patent expiration. The deal targets Apogee's zumilokibart, a drug candidate for atopic dermatitis currently in late-stage development, along with respiratory drug candidates.
The acquisition supports AbbVie's Dividend King status—companies with 50-plus consecutive years of dividend increases—by strengthening its product pipeline. Management is positioning newer drugs Skyrizi and Rinvoq to replace lost Humira revenue, and the Apogee assets add additional coverage to sustain the company's dividend growth trajectory.
Zumilokibart enters AbbVie's dermatology portfolio at a late stage of development, potentially accelerating time to market. The respiratory candidates broaden the company's therapeutic reach beyond its current immunology focus. AbbVie has maintained annual dividend increases despite Humira biosimilar competition eroding what was once the world's best-selling drug.
