Alphabet's Cloud Backlog Just Topped $500 Billion. Is Google Cloud About to Overtake Search as the Growth Engine?

Alphabet's Google Cloud division is sitting on a $514 billion backlog, and revenue growth there has accelerated to 82%. That pace is the core of the bull case that cloud could overtake search as the company's primary growth engine by next year.

Search remains the profit anchor, generating $63 billion in quarterly revenue at high margins. The shift in growth leadership, if it comes, would not diminish search's role as the cash generator funding the buildout.

The buildout is large. The article cites $811 billion in capital expenditure commitments backing cloud expansion, which creates near-term free cash flow pressure. Analysts nonetheless project that the cloud segment will drive the majority of Alphabet's roughly $300 billion in free cash flow by 2031.

Valuation is the hook: shares (GOOGL, GOOG) trade at about 17x earnings. Interpretation: that multiple prices in the spending drag more than the backlog conversion, so the gap between a $514 billion contracted pipeline and a 17x P/E is where the debate sits.
