AST SpaceMobile’s Japan Catalyst Puts Its Rollout Story Back in Focus
AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) jumped 21% on June 29 after Japan unveiled 148 billion yen ($912 million) in funding for a Rakuten-led satellite communications project. The capital backs Japan's J-LEO initiative, a domestic direct-to-device satellite network designed to cut reliance on foreign systems like Starlink.
Rakuten and AST SpaceMobile are forming a joint venture targeting initial commercial services in late 2026, with full deployment scheduled for 2027. The partnership positions ASTS as a key infrastructure provider for Japan's sovereign satellite strategy, validating the company's technology at a national scale.
AST SpaceMobile continues launching satellites to reach its target of 45 low Earth orbit satellites by the end of 2026. The Japan deal marks a concrete revenue pathway as the company scales its constellation, shifting the narrative from pure capital expenditure to commercial deployment.
The nearly $1 billion commitment from Japan provides external validation of ASTS's direct-to-device satellite model and reduces execution risk tied to early-stage deployment.
