Bank of Japan is expected to hold rates this week — but stay hawkish: CNBC survey

A CNBC survey shows the Bank of Japan is expected to hold its policy rate at 1.25% when its two-day meeting ends Friday. The more important finding for yen traders: every respondent expects the BOJ to set the stage for a rate hike in December or January.

The survey ties that expectation to two drivers: rising inflation and rising wages. Those are the conditions the BOJ is expected to cite as it builds its case for tightening, and the unanimity of the response signals little dissent among surveyed participants on the direction of policy.

Interpretation: a hold on Friday would not be a dovish signal. With all respondents pointing to a hike within roughly two meetings, the market's focus shifts from whether the BOJ moves to how clearly it telegraphs the move. A hold paired with hawkish language would reinforce the December-or-January timeline, while a hold that sounds noncommittal would introduce doubt into a consensus that currently has none.

The survey says a hike remains "very much alive" in the near term, which keeps the December and January windows in focus for yen positioning. The 1.25% policy rate is the baseline against which any future move will be measured.
