Bear of the Day: Albemarle Corporation (ALB)

By · Independent market intelligence from Sunday Night Futures LLC
Source: Zacks Investment ResearchOriginal article →

Albemarle (ALB) just landed a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell), the lowest rating on the scale, as analysts slash earnings estimates on the world's largest lithium producer.

The revisions are steep. Q3 earnings expectations dropped 13%, and Q4 expectations fell 36% after disappointing Q2 guidance. That kind of back-to-back cut signals analysts are pushing out any recovery rather than trimming at the margins.

The backdrop is lithium pricing. Prices have fallen roughly 80% from their late-2022 peaks, with slower EV sales growth and increased lithium supply cited as the drivers. For a pure-play producer, that is a direct hit to the revenue line.

ALB shares are down 55% over five years, while the S&P 500 has gained 85% over the same stretch. That roughly 140-point performance gap shows how thoroughly the stock has lagged the broader market.

Interpretation: a Strong Sell rank driven by revisions, not just valuation, suggests estimate momentum is still pointing down. Whether the 36% Q4 cut is the floor or a waypoint depends on lithium pricing and the supply-demand balance cited above.
