Berkshire Hathaway Says It's Now America's 4th-Largest Homebuilder. It Also Owns More Than 10% of Lennar.
Berkshire Hathaway now ranks as America's 4th-largest homebuilder after buying Taylor Morrison for $6.8 billion and folding it into Clayton Properties Group. The combined entity delivered nearly 23,000 homes in 2025.
The deal lands alongside an existing equity position: Berkshire holds an 11% stake in Lennar, with smaller positions in other homebuilders. For BRK.A and BRK.B holders, that makes housing both an operating business and a portfolio exposure. For LEN and LEN.B, an 11% holder of that size is a notable presence on the register.
Berkshire is moving in despite a tough backdrop. Mortgage rates sit near 7.3%, and the industry faces a housing shortage. CEO Greg Abel said the company is committed to the housing sector for the long term, framing the Taylor Morrison purchase as a durable allocation rather than a cyclical bet.
Interpretation: committing $6.8 billion at roughly 7.3% mortgage rates suggests Berkshire is willing to look through near-term affordability pressure. That is a read on the evidence, not a stated Berkshire thesis. Listed peers DHI and NVR now compete with a scaled, deep-pocketed rival.
