Big Blue's Wild Wednesday Ride: IBM Crushes Q3 Earnings, So Why Did the Stock Tank Mid-Call?

IBM posted a Q3 beat, then gave back its gains mid-call. The stock initially surged 7.3% in after-hours trading on $17.1B in revenue and $2.95 EPS, both ahead of expectations. Then CEO Arvind Krishna spoke, and the move reversed.

Krishna warned during the call that corporate customers are worried about uncontrolled AI spending with unclear returns. IBM slid 4.6% after-hours on the comments, a swing of roughly 12 percentage points from the earnings-release peak.

The remarks did not stay contained to IBM. They triggered a broader AI sector selloff, putting AI-linked names on the defensive, including NVDA, TSLA, ORCL, ORCLPD and CoreWeave (CRWV).

Interpretation: the market treated Krishna's comment as a read on customer demand rather than an IBM-specific issue. A CEO flagging ROI doubts from corporate buyers lands harder when the sector has been priced for sustained AI investment. The fact that a clean earnings beat could not hold the stock suggests that guidance language and customer commentary now carry more weight than the quarterly numbers themselves.
