Block's Adjusted Profit Jumps as Losses Climb: Rapid Earnings Reaction
XYZ posted a 22% jump in third-quarter gross profit and raised full-year guidance, but GAAP results show growing strain from credit losses and legal costs.
The guidance raise rests on two drivers: accelerating U.S. payment volume growth at Square and improved operational efficiency following workforce reductions. Adjusted profit rose on those gains.
The GAAP picture cuts the other way. Loan losses surged 66%, a steep deterioration in credit performance. The company also took $435 million in legal charges, marking the third consecutive quarter of charges at that level. Those items offset much of the adjusted profit strength and widen the gap between headline adjusted figures and reported results.
Interpretation: the market is being asked to weigh a clean operating story, built on Square volume and cost cuts, against a lending book losing money faster than the top line grows. A recurring $435 million legal charge three quarters running suggests the company may be treating a one-time item as a routine cost, which could erode confidence in adjusted metrics if it continues.
