Broadcom Is Backing Anthropic and OpenAI With $92 Billion. Here's What It Means for Investors.

Broadcom (AVGO) is financing up to $92 billion in chip purchases for two of AI's biggest customers, a move that deepens its grip on custom AI accelerators while loading its balance sheet with customer credit exposure.

The breakdown: Anthropic gets $60 billion in total financing, split between $42 billion in senior debt and $18 billion in junior debt. OpenAI gets $50 billion. Those pieces are sized to secure Broadcom's position as the leading supplier of custom AI accelerators, known as XPUs.

The logic is straightforward. By financing the purchases, Broadcom ties two major AI labs more tightly to its custom silicon, strengthening its competitive advantage and growth potential against rivals including NVDA and MRVL.

The risk sits on the other side of the ledger. XPUs are designed for specific customers, and they carry limited resale value outside their original designers. If a borrower struggles, Broadcom cannot easily redeploy the hardware to recover value. Interpretation: that makes the junior tranche of Anthropic's financing the most exposed piece, since it sits behind $42 billion of senior debt.

The structure also blurs the line between chip vendor and lender. Broadcom is effectively underwriting its own revenue, which can pull demand forward while concentrating risk in two counterparties.
