Brookfield Quietly Built a $180 Billion Insurance Business. Here's Why It Could Be the Next Growth Engine.
Brookfield (BN) has assembled a $180 billion insurance platform through acquisitions over five years, with the segment's distributable earnings surging from $30 million in 2021 to $1.7 billion in 2023. The alternative asset manager plans to merge this operation with Brookfield Wealth Solutions and targets $350 billion in insurance assets by 2030.
The insurance unit is projected to deliver 34% of Brookfield's total earnings growth through the end of the decade. Management expects the business to help drive a 25% compound annual earnings growth rate through 2030, positioning insurance as a core earnings pillar alongside the firm's traditional infrastructure and real estate holdings.
The strategy mirrors moves by other asset managers using insurance balance sheets to secure long-duration capital for alternative investments. Brookfield's model pairs insurance float with illiquid assets like infrastructure and private credit, generating spread income while reducing reliance on external fundraising cycles.
