Can Peru's Harvest and Calavo Drive Mission Produce's Growth?

Mission Produce (AVO) is guiding to 120-130 million pounds of Peruvian avocado output in fiscal 2026, but its latest quarter shows volume gains aren't translating into profit. Q3 volume rose 38%, yet a 9% price decline dragged gross margin down 270 basis points to 9.9%. Abundant global avocado supplies are pressuring profitability.

The offset is the Calavo integration. Cost synergy targets now sit above $30 million, a figure that gives AVO a self-help lever while pricing stays soft. Calavo (CVLT-adjacent exposure is not at issue here; the integration itself is what matters) is the named driver behind the raised target.

Interpretation: the Q3 numbers describe a volume-for-price trade. A 38% volume gain against a 9% price drop means AVO is moving more fruit at thinner returns, and the 9.9% gross margin leaves little cushion if supply stays heavy. The Peruvian harvest range adds supply-side scale, which cuts both ways: more volume to sell, but potentially more pressure on pricing if the broader market stays abundant.

The bull case rests on synergies offsetting price weakness. The bear case rests on margins continuing to compress faster than cost savings arrive.
