Centene Q3 Earnings Call Highlights Faster Recovery and Medicaid Risks
Centene (CNC) raised its 2026 earnings guidance to above $5.20 per share after posting Q3 adjusted EPS of 58 cents, a beat versus expectations. The guidance lift is the headline for positioning, and the earnings call pairs it with clear upside drivers and two defined risks.
On the upside, Medicare Advantage is on track to break even a year early, pulling forward a profitability milestone. Marketplace margins are expected to reach 5% in 2026, which supports the higher full-year EPS target.
The risks are quantified. Medicaid enrollment is expected to decline 8%-9% by year-end, a direct hit to the membership base. Looking further out, Part D margins could compress to 2%-3% in 2027, which may cap how much of the 2026 improvement carries forward. Interpretation: the market is being asked to weigh near-term recovery momentum against pressure in two separate business lines, so the guidance raise may not erase concerns about 2027 earnings power.
