The Close

A hawkish Fed and crude collapse punished cyclicals while mega-cap tech held the tape together — dispersion, not direction, was the story.

Index Action

$SPY closed at $754.32, -0.44%, masking the split beneath the surface. $QQQ eked out +0.02% to $704.72 as semis and mega-cap tech absorbed rate-hike headlines. $DIA was the day's damage, ending -1.15% at $515.22 — the worst major by a wide margin, dragged by financials and energy exposure. $IWM closed -0.43% at $283.81, small caps offering no relief as the rate path steepened. The 115-basis-point gap between Nasdaq and Dow is a textbook defensive-growth rotation on a hawkish print.

Sector Read

Only three sectors held green, and barely: $XLK +0.10%, $XLV +0.07%, $XLU flat. The carnage was concentrated at the bottom — $XLE cratered -2.88% as crude broke, and $XLF sank -1.62% on the Fed's signal of further tightening ahead. $XLB -0.73%, $XLY -0.63%, and $XLRE -0.60% rounded out the rate-sensitive damage. This is the classic hawkish-Fed sector map: duration and defensives bid, banks and cyclicals sold, energy hit twice by macro and commodity.

Single-Name Standouts

$AMD led the tape at +1.65% to $512.42, extending its semi leadership on volume of nearly 20M. $NVDA followed +0.82% to $213.66 on heavy 77M shares — chips remain the market's spine. $MSFT was the notable mega-cap loser, -1.37% to $490.37, with the AI-consciousness headline from its AI chief adding narrative noise. $COIN got hammered -4.42% to $164.44 as risk-off crypto sentiment met a hawkish Fed. $USO collapsed -3.50% to $156.17, tracking WTI's break. $TSLA closed +0.42% at $357.94 but printed a wide $354.89–$365.10 range — indecision at the highs.

After-Hours Watch

Futures extended the weakness: $ES=F -0.45%, $YM=F -1.19%, $RTY=F -0.50%, with $NQ=F barely positive at +0.07%. WTI ($CL=F) sits at $102.11, -3.52%, and gold ($GC=F) softened -0.66% to $4,304.30 — a rare combo suggesting dollar strength on the Fed pivot. Bitcoin held $76,093, +0.17% over 24 hours, refusing to break despite the equity risk-off.

Setting Up Tomorrow

The 8:30 ET stack is loaded: Initial Jobless Claims (prev 207K), Continuing Claims (prev 1.775M), Building Permits, and Housing Starts all print pre-open. A hot claims miss on top of yesterday's resilient retail sales narrative would reinforce the hawkish Fed path. Watch $SPY $754 as the pivot, with $750 the first line of defense. $QQQ needs to hold $704 to keep the tech-leadership thesis intact. Energy names are in freefall — no bid until crude stabilizes.

The Read

The market is digesting a Fed that just told it more hikes are coming, and it's doing so by hiding in semis and selling everything rate-sensitive. That's a fragile equilibrium. If claims run hot tomorrow, the dispersion trade breaks and $QQQ leadership goes with it.

Key levels: $SPY $750 support / $758 resistance · $QQQ $704 pivot · $CL=F $100 psychological line.
