The Close
Tech ripped the tape higher in a violent risk-on session, with semis and mega-cap platforms doing the heavy lifting while energy and defensives were left for dead.
Index Action
The dispersion told the whole story. $QQQ closed at $741.32, +2.76%, lapping $SPY at $773.51, +1.55% and leaving $DIA at $519.78, +0.77% and $IWM at $285.55, +0.54% in the dust. A 220bp gap between Nasdaq and small caps on an up day is a concentration signal, not a broadening one — this was a mega-cap tech tape, full stop. Breadth participation from cyclicals and small caps was tepid, and the Russell's half-percent gain against Nasdaq's near-3% print flags that the rally has yet to leak into the second tier.
Sector Read
$XLK led at +2.77%, more than double the next-best group, with $XLY at +1.08% riding the mega-cap consumer names. From there it thinned fast: $XLV +0.37%, $XLI and $XLRE both +0.14%, $XLF barely green at +0.07%. The bottom of the board was ugly — $XLB -0.56%, $XLP -1.06%, $XLU -1.07%, and $XLE crushed at -2.74% as crude collapsed. This is a textbook barbell unwind: bond proxies and defensives dumped, energy hammered, cyclical growth bid. Zacks flagged a "Tech Stocks Break Out" narrative — the tape agreed.
Single-Name Standouts
$META was the marquee move, closing at $741.25, +11.36% on a 47.5M-share day, engulfing prior range with a $679.60–$753.00 print. $AMD ripped +9.95% to $615.52, tagging a session high of $616.69 — semis got a bid that felt structural, not tactical. $NVDA added +2.27% to $227.38 on 104M shares, still the volume king. $TSLA closed +3.03% at $375.30, $AMZN +1.87%, $GOOGL +1.55%, $MSFT +1.59% — the mega-cap complex worked in unison. On the other side, $USO cratered -3.68% to $148.16 as crude broke, and $GLD slipped -0.69% despite the risk-on backdrop, an unusual pairing worth watching.
After-Hours Watch
Futures held the day's tone. $ES=F sits at 7831.25 (+1.54%), $NQ=F at 30778.75 (+2.88%), $YM=F +0.75%, $RTY=F +0.59%. Crude kept bleeding after hours — $CL=F at 91.99, -4.26%, $BZ=F at 100.09, -3.64%. Crypto ran hard alongside equities: $BTC +6.95% to $86,746, $ETH +5.38%, $SOL +7.44%. $COIN closed +3.50% at $201.05 and the crypto bid post-close argues for follow-through.
Setting Up Tomorrow
$SPY closed near the highs at $773.51 — the level to defend is prior close $761.69, with $770 the intraday pivot. $QQQ at $741.32 leaves $721.45 as the line in the sand; a hold above $735 keeps the breakout intact. $META's $753 high and $AMD's $616.69 high are the next reference points if momentum extends. Energy is the fade-or-catch trade — $USO through $146.64 opens more downside. No high-impact US data on deck.
The Read
This was a concentrated mega-cap tech surge riding a crude collapse and defensive dump — powerful, but narrow. Watch whether small caps and financials join the party tomorrow; without them, the setup is fragile. Key levels: $SPY $770 pivot / $761.69 support; $QQQ $735 support / $741.32 breakout; $CL=F $90 psychological.
