Coinbase Just Joined a 140-Company Stablecoin Alliance. Here's What It Means for the Stock.

Coinbase joined a coalition of more than 140 companies backing Open USD (OUSD), a new stablecoin that breaks the exchange's exclusive reliance on Circle's USDC. The partnership positions Coinbase to diversify its stablecoin revenue stream, which now accounts for 19% of total company revenue.

The coalition structure allows members to jointly manage OUSD and share reserve income, a departure from Coinbase's single-partner model with Circle. The move gives the exchange exposure to stablecoin growth without dependency on a single issuer, potentially expanding transaction fee opportunities as stablecoin trading and custody volumes increase.

Circle faces the clearest near-term pressure. The USDC issuer loses its exclusive partnership advantage and must now compete with a consortium-backed alternative that splits economics among participants rather than concentrating them with a single stablecoin provider.

The 19% revenue contribution from stablecoins underscores their strategic importance to Coinbase's business model. By adding OUSD alongside USDC, the exchange hedges against concentration risk while maintaining optionality as regulatory frameworks for digital dollar alternatives continue to evolve.
