Eli Lilly says it will file for approval of next-generation obesity drug in 2027 as it clears two more trials
Eli Lilly announced Thursday it will file for regulatory approval of retatrutide, its next-generation obesity drug, in the first quarter of 2027 following positive results from two additional late-stage trials. The pharmaceutical company now has successful data from five late-stage trials for the treatment, which it is positioning as the next pillar of its obesity franchise.
The timeline puts retatrutide on track to potentially reach the market by 2028, extending Lilly's runway in the rapidly expanding obesity treatment sector. The company is already marketing Zepbound and Mounjaro, which have driven significant revenue growth. Retatrutide represents a critical component of Lilly's strategy to maintain its competitive position against rivals including Novo Nordisk.
The latest trial successes de-risk the development program and strengthen the probability of commercial launch. Lilly has not disclosed specific efficacy data from the two recent trials, but the five positive late-stage readouts provide a substantial clinical foundation for the regulatory submission.
