EQT Is Building a $50 Billion Natural Gas Giant as AI Power Demand Surges
EQT is acquiring Range Resources in an all-stock deal that creates a roughly $50 billion natural gas producer, giving EQT the title of largest U.S. gas producer with production capacity above 9 Bcfe/d. Range trades under RRC; the combined company would carry the EQT ticker.
The thesis behind the deal is AI power demand. Surging electricity needs from AI data centers are the stated driver, and EQT is pursuing long-term supply agreements at premium prices to lock in that demand. Pairing those contracts with 9 Bcfe/d of scale is the core of the strategy.
Interpretation: an all-stock structure means RRC holders take EQT shares rather than cash, so their exposure shifts from a standalone producer to the combined entity's fate. The premium-priced, long-dated contracts only pay off if data center buildout continues, which makes the combined company a leveraged bet on that trend.
The risk is explicit. A slowdown in AI infrastructure spending would undercut the demand story that justifies the deal and the premium pricing EQT is seeking to secure.
