Factories Hold Their Ground as Stocks Coil for a Break

The S&P 500 is consolidating in a tightening triangle pattern with a potential breakout toward 8,000 hinging on June ISM Manufacturing data due this week. Economists expect the index to print 53.5, which would mark the sixth consecutive month of expansion in the manufacturing sector.

The ISM release comes as traders parse conflicting signals. Regional manufacturing surveys have delivered mixed readings, but the national ISM data has shown a positive relationship between new orders and inventory levels—a combination that typically supports continued production growth. A firm reading at or above expectations would reinforce the soft-landing narrative that has underpinned equity strength this year.

Input costs remain elevated, however, posing a risk to the disinflationary trend the Federal Reserve is monitoring. Rising prices in the ISM's sub-indexes could complicate the central bank's path toward rate cuts and put pressure on equity multiples if inflation expectations resettle higher.

The S&P 500's technical setup suggests a directional move is imminent as the consolidation pattern tightens.
