Forget Rivian's Revenue and EPS: This Is the Q3 Number Investors Need to Watch.

Rivian's (RIVN) Q3 print hinges on one line item: automotive gross profit, not revenue or EPS.

The automotive segment has improved by $299 million over the past year, yet it remains unprofitable. That trajectory makes gross profit the cleanest read on whether RIVN is closing the gap toward breakeven.

Two forces are pulling in opposite directions. On the positive side, R2 production is ramping, and the company is adding shifts. More output typically supports unit economics, which is an interpretation rather than a stated outcome. On the negative side, regulatory credit revenue is declining, removing a cushion that previously helped offset vehicle-level losses. High launch costs tied to the R2 ramp add further pressure, and together these challenge near-term profitability.

The setup is a tug-of-war inside a single metric. A further improvement on the $299 million year-over-year gain would signal that production scaling is outrunning the loss of credit revenue. A stall would suggest launch costs and shrinking credits are absorbing the progress.

Headline revenue and EPS may look noisy against that backdrop, so the gross profit figure is the number the market is likely to anchor on.
