IDEXX Sales Rise 10% as Margin Outlook Slips: Rapid Earnings Reaction
IDEXX (IDXX) shares surged 16% after the company posted Q3 2026 revenue growth of 10% to $1.21 billion and raised its 2026 earnings forecast. The headline beat comes with a catch: the margin outlook moved the other way.
Recurring diagnostics sales, the core of the business, grew 11%, outpacing total revenue growth. That is the cleanest part of the print.
The earnings raise is lower quality. The profit increase stems from tax benefits, lower interest costs, and buybacks rather than testing demand. In other words, the guidance lift owes more to below-the-line items and share count reduction than to operating strength.
IDEXX also trimmed its operating margin outlook. Management expects Q4 to show minimal margin improvement as it absorbs costs from its CoVet software acquisition. Interpretation: the market is rewarding the top-line growth and the higher EPS number, while discounting the weaker margin path, at least for now.
The 16% move leaves little room for disappointment if the margin story deteriorates further. A raised earnings target built on tax and financing items is less durable than one built on operating leverage.
