Intel Server Sales Jump 78%, Q4 Outlook Dims: Rapid Earnings Reaction
INTC shares tumbled 18% after-hours despite a blowout data center quarter, as a weak fourth-quarter forecast overshadowed the results.
Intel's data center revenue jumped 78%, its strongest growth in 15 years, and operating income tripled. Server chip demand is outpacing supply, a sign the data center business is running hot.
The market focused elsewhere. Management's Q4 guidance calls for lower revenue, lower gross margin, and lower earnings. The drag: a PC market slowdown expected to last through mid-2025, which is offsetting the data center strength.
Interpretation: the 18% after-hours drop suggests investors are weighting the near-term guidance and the duration of the PC weakness more heavily than a record-setting data center print. A 15-year growth high and tripled operating income were not enough to offset a forecast that points down on revenue, margin, and earnings simultaneously. The mid-2025 timeline for PC softness also stretches the recovery window well beyond a single quarter, which likely explains why the reaction was so severe.
The supply constraint cuts both ways. Demand exceeding supply in server chips is a positive for pricing and utilization, but it also means data center growth is capped by what INTC can produce, limiting how fast that segment can backfill PC losses.
