Is AGNC Investment’s 16.5%-Yielding Dividend Still Safe? Its Earnings Are Declining, But the CEO Just Said Another Metric Matters More.

AGNC's 16.5% dividend yield is under scrutiny after a quarter of declining earnings and book value, driven by surging interest rates that hit its Agency MBS investments. CEO Peter Federico is steering investors away from earnings and toward a different yardstick.

Spread income now sits dangerously close to the dividend level, which is the core bear case: little cushion between what AGNC earns and what it pays out. Federico counters that the dividend remains safe because the company's investment returns, roughly 20% return on equity, still exceed its 19% cost of capital.

That one-point gap is the entire argument. Federico's framework says the payout holds as long as returns stay above costs. Interpretation: a 1-point margin leaves little room for error, so a modest compression in returns or rise in funding costs would erase the buffer he is relying on.

The pressure traces to rate volatility, which dented both earnings and book value in the quarter. Book value matters here because it anchors how the market prices the stock relative to its underlying portfolio, and its decline reduces the capital base supporting the payout.

Preferred securities tied to the name, including AGNCL, AGNCM, AGNCN, AGNCO, AGNCP and AGNCZ, trade alongside AGNC in the same capital structure and share exposure to the same portfolio performance.
