Is Alibaba's AI Capex Push a Catalyst or a Risk for the Stock?
Alibaba (BABA) is paying heavily for its AI buildout: capex jumped 75% to RMB 67.68 billion, free cash outflow widened, and net income plunged 75%.
The spending backs an ambitious expansion. Alibaba plans to build more than 20 gigawatts of global data center capacity by 2032 and has unveiled its Zhenwu V900 AI chip. Demand appears to be there so far: AI Cloud revenues surged 45%, with triple-digit growth in AI-related products.
The tension is straightforward. Revenue momentum in AI Cloud is real, but the cost of capturing it is showing up immediately in cash flow and earnings. A 75% earnings drop alongside a 75% capex increase puts the stock's thesis squarely on execution: Alibaba has set three-year payback targets for the AI investment, and the market will judge whether those targets hold.
Interpretation: the matching 75% moves in capex and net income suggest investors are being asked to look past near-term profitability for a multi-year return. The 2032 capacity target extends that bet well beyond the three-year payback window, which raises the stakes on early results.
Among the names in this theme, BABA carries the most visible earnings strain from AI spending, while MSFT and AMZN sit in the same broader AI infrastructure conversation.
