Is MercadoLibre Becoming Latin America's Leading Fintech?
MercadoLibre's (MELI) fintech arm Mercado Pago posted significant expansion in Q2 2026, with monthly active users climbing 30% to 88 million and assets under management surging 68% to $23.2 billion. Total payment volume hit $101 billion for the quarter, while the credit portfolio grew 75% to $16.4 billion with asset quality holding steady.
Despite the operational momentum, MELI trades at a P/E of 39.01, a premium to industry peers, according to Zacks Investment Research. Recent earnings estimates for the stock have moved lower, creating tension between growth metrics and valuation multiples.
The fintech segment now represents a core value driver for MELI, which operates Latin America's largest e-commerce platform. The 68% jump in AUM and near-doubling of the credit book signal aggressive customer acquisition, but the premium multiple leaves little room for execution missteps or margin compression.
