Is Procter & Gamble a Buy After Its Latest Earnings Report?
PG jumped more than 5% after Q1 FY2027 results showed organic sales growth of 4%, beating expectations. The quality of the beat stands out: growth came mainly from volume and product mix improvements rather than price increases.
The earnings line tells a weaker story. Core EPS rose just 1%, as higher commodity costs and tariffs continue to pressure margins. Strong top-line growth is not translating into profit growth.
Valuation now leaves less room for error. PG trades at 23.5x forward earnings, up from 21x earlier in the year. That multiple expansion happened while EPS growth stayed minimal, meaning the rally has been driven by re-rating rather than earnings power.
The Motley Fool analyst argues the stock would need significant earnings acceleration plus further multiple expansion to deliver a compelling 10% annualized return over the next five years. The recommendation: wait for a better entry point.
Interpretation: a 5% pop on volume-led growth rewards the quality of sales, but a 1% core EPS gain against a 23.5x multiple suggests the market is already paying for a margin recovery that has not yet appeared.
