I've Covered Tesla for Over a Decade. Here's Whether It's a Stock to Buy More Than 21% Below Its Record.
TSLA's headline Q3 operating income recovery is thinner than it looks: more than 60% of it came from tariff refunds, not core business improvement. Revenue was flat year-over-year at $28.0 billion, a sharp deceleration for a company that trades at roughly 420x trailing earnings and sits more than 21% below its record high.
The Motley Fool analyst, who has covered the company for over a decade, is not buying here. His position: wait for operating income to grow without refund help, and for concrete Robotaxi profitability metrics, before adding exposure.
There are two bright spots in the source. Megapack energy storage shows promise, and Robotaxi could turn profitable in 2027. Neither is yet reflected in the reported numbers. Flat revenue plus refund-inflated profit leaves the 420x multiple resting almost entirely on future execution.
Interpretation: at that multiple, the market is pricing in outcomes the Q3 results don't yet demonstrate. If one-time tariff refunds are stripped out, the earnings recovery narrative loses most of its support.
