Job openings posted big September gain in positive sign for labor market ahead of payrolls report

September job openings jumped to 7.52 million, up 333,000 from August and well above the Dow Jones consensus estimate of 7.15 million, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday.

The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey showed strength beyond the headline. The number of workers quitting their positions surged, hiring rose, and layoffs dropped. That combination points in one direction: employers are posting more roles and keeping staff, while workers feel confident enough to leave for other jobs.

The 7.52 million print beat consensus by roughly 370,000 openings, a sizable miss against expectations. Quits are often read as a gauge of worker confidence in finding new employment, so a rise alongside falling layoffs reinforces the picture of a labor market holding firm rather than cracking.

Interpretation: a stronger-than-expected JOLTS reading can complicate any argument for aggressive easing, since it suggests labor demand is not deteriorating. Markets tend to react to the gap between data and consensus, and a beat this wide gives rate-sensitive assets a reason to reassess.

The release lands just ahead of the payrolls report, so traders now have a fresh baseline for judging whether the monthly jobs number confirms or contradicts this strength.
