Lucid Is Buying Time. Here's What It Costs Shareholders

LCID has doubled its share count while RIVN has diluted far less, and the gap shows up in the margins. LCID's shares outstanding rose 115% from the end of 2022 through June 2026, versus a 47% increase at RIVN.

The extra capital hasn't bought profitability. LCID's gross margin sits at -93%, while RIVN reached positive gross margins in 2025. On the cash side, LCID burned $2.41 billion in operating cash in the first half of 2026 alone.

LCID's path away from repeated financing rounds runs through $1.4 billion in identified cost improvements. Interpretation: the dilution record suggests shareholders have funded the gap between spending and revenue rather than a path to earnings. Each raise buys runway but shrinks every existing holder's slice, and the margin deficit means the money is being consumed rather than compounded.

The RIVN comparison sharpens the picture. A 47% share count increase is still substantial, but RIVN paired it with positive gross margins, which is the outcome LCID has yet to show. Interpretation: the market may keep a valuation discount on LCID until margins move from deeply negative toward breakeven.
