NextEra Energy (NEE) secured a $1.9 billion Department of Energy loan guarantee to restart Iowa's Duane Arnold Energy Center, a nuclear facility shuttered in 2020 after operating economics turned unfavorable. The plant will deliver 615 megawatts of baseload power.

The financing unlocks a 25-year power purchase agreement with Google (GOOG, GOOGL), which will consume most of the plant's output to fuel its expanding AI data center footprint in Iowa. The arrangement ties nuclear restart economics directly to hyperscaler demand for reliable, carbon-free electricity as AI workloads strain existing grids.

NextEra's preferred securities (NEEPN, NEEPS, NEEPT, NEEPU, NEEPV, NEEPW) could see supporting flow if the restart validates a replicable model for monetizing idled nuclear assets through long-term tech-sector offtake deals. The federal loan guarantee mitigates construction and regulatory risk, making the project pencil where merchant power sales previously failed.
