Not Prime. Not Delivery. This Business Holds the Key to Amazon's Future.
Amazon Web Services delivered 60% of AMZN's total operating income in Q2 despite accounting for just 21% of sales, underscoring the cloud unit's growing importance to the company's profit engine. AWS posted a 39.3% operating margin in the quarter, dwarfing the 7.8% margin in North American commerce.
The cloud division grew revenue 37% year-over-year in Q2 while simultaneously ramping capital expenditures in AI infrastructure. This combination of accelerating growth and heavy AI investment positions AWS as the primary driver of Amazon's margin expansion trajectory, even as the retail business generates the majority of top-line revenue.
The profitability gap between AWS and Amazon's commerce operations continues to widen. While North American retail operates on thin single-digit margins typical of e-commerce, AWS delivers nearly five times the operating margin, making each incremental dollar of cloud revenue significantly more valuable to the bottom line.
The AI infrastructure buildout represents both near-term margin pressure from capex and a long-term bet on enterprise AI workloads migrating to AWS. Success in capturing AI demand will determine whether the cloud unit can sustain its 37% growth rate and maintain pricing power in an increasingly competitive market.
