Novo Nordisk Says Wegovy Shot Helped Children Lose Weight in Trial
Novo Nordisk reported that its Wegovy injection helped children with obesity lose weight in a clinical trial, with two out of five participants no longer classified as obese after 68 weeks of treatment. The Danish pharmaceutical company disclosed the pediatric trial results, marking a potential expansion of the weight-loss drug beyond its current adult patient base.
The 68-week study demonstrated measurable efficacy in reducing obesity classification among the enrolled children, though specific weight-loss percentages were not disclosed in the trial announcement. Wegovy, already approved for adult weight management, has been a significant revenue driver for Novo Nordisk as demand for GLP-1 receptor agonists continues to surge across developed markets.
The pediatric data could support regulatory filings to expand Wegovy's label to younger patients, opening a new market segment for the blockbuster drug. Childhood obesity affects millions globally, and pharmaceutical companies have faced scrutiny over the limited treatment options available for pediatric weight management.
