Nvidia Did the Heavy Lifting for the Major Market Indexes Today
NVDA carried the major indexes Wednesday, jumping 3.8% to $225.67 and single-handedly delivering 0.38 percentage points to the Nasdaq Composite's 0.4% gain. META also contributed significantly to the advance. Without these two names, the Nasdaq would have closed negative and the S&P 500 nearly flat, according to The Motley Fool.
New York Fed President John Williams provided the macro backdrop, attributing rising Treasury yields to economic strength driven by AI and data center investment—sectors where NVDA dominates. The comments underscored how concentrated Wednesday's rally was: two stocks masked broad market weakness.
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq each rose approximately 0.4%, but strip out NVDA and META and the picture reverses. NVDA's move alone accounted for nearly the entire Nasdaq gain, highlighting the index's vulnerability to a handful of mega-cap names.
