OKLO inked a deal with META to develop a 1.2-gigawatt nuclear facility in south central Ohio dedicated to powering Meta's data centers. Pre-construction is scheduled to start in 2027, with general construction launching in late 2028 or 2029. The first phase is targeted to come online around 2030.

The timeline faces skepticism due to the unproven nature of small modular reactor technology that underpins the project. SMRs have yet to demonstrate commercial viability at scale, making the 2030 target ambitious. OKLO shares are down 45% year-to-date as investor caution persists around both the company's business model and the broader SMR sector's ability to deliver on deployment promises.

The agreement marks another major tech player securing nuclear capacity for AI and data center buildout, following similar moves by MSFT with CEG's Three Mile Island restart. Meta joins peers racing to lock in carbon-free baseload power ahead of projected data center energy demand spikes.
