Pre-Market Preview — Tuesday, August 18, 2026
Overnight Pulse: Risk-off tone as a global bond rout drags equities lower, with tech taking the brunt.
Asia & Europe
The bond selloff is the story. Reuters flags "selling grips bond markets from US to Japan," with the US 30-year at its highest since 2007. That fingerprint is all over Asia: the Nikkei cratered -2.54% to 67,460.73, a brutal session as Japanese yields press higher and the carry trade wobbles. Hong Kong bucked the tape, with the Hang Seng +1.41% to 25,471.15 on mainland stimulus hopes and China's surprise return to oil stockpiling in July. Europe leans red but orderly: DAX -0.74%, Euro Stoxx 50 -0.54%, FTSE 100 -0.26%. Duration is the pain trade globally, and equity multiples are compressing in sympathy — expect that theme to bleed into the US cash open.
US Futures Setup
Futures are heavy with a clear growth-over-value split. ES -0.49% at 7,730.75, NQ -1.23% at 29,726.75, YM flat at 53,542, RTY -0.27% at 3,056.50. The Dow's resilience against a Nasdaq drawdown of that size tells you everything: rising yields are hammering long-duration tech while cyclicals hold the line. WTI +0.57% to $84.22 on the China stockpiling story, Brent $90.99. Gold -0.57% to $4,448.30 and silver -1.69% — real yields are winning. Bias into the open: sell rallies in QQQ until yields cooperate.
Names to Watch
- ▸$NVDA ($220.23, -2.12%): Semis leading the tech unwind on thin pre-open volume; watch for continuation or a dip-buy reflex at the cash open.
- ▸$AMD ($488.99, -3.36%): Worst of the megacap semis pre-market. A move this size on light tape can fade — but a weak open confirms the rotation.
- ▸$TSLA ($333.60, -1.68%): High-beta bellwether tracking NQ lower.
- ▸$AAPL ($308.00, +0.79%): The lone megacap green. Defensive bid amid the tech carnage.
- ▸$MSFT ($483.50, +0.64%): Also holding, keeping the Dow flat. If MSFT/AAPL crack, the whole index goes.
The Setup
$SPY last $768.98 vs prev close $772.67. Key levels: $772.67 overhead as first resistance (yesterday's close and gap-fill target), $768 as the pre-market pivot, and $765 as the line in the sand — a break there opens $760 quickly. Thesis: Fade the first bounce into $772 unless the 10Y calms below overnight highs. If yields keep grinding, QQQ underperforms SPY and IWM catches a rotation bid intraday. Patience on the open — let the tape show its hand in the first 15 minutes.
