Overnight Pulse — Risk-off with an oil overlay: crude ripping, equities heavy, gold soft, yen bid.
Asia & Europe
Asia took the brunt. The Nikkei shed 1.7% to 65,269, the worst session in the region, as a firmer yen — flagged in overnight wires — pressured exporters. Hang Seng dropped 1.3% to 25,317, weighed by soft China domestic auto demand even as export volumes held up. Europe opened defensive but contained: DAX -0.47% at 25,925, FTSE 100 -0.12% at 10,818, Euro Stoxx 50 -0.12% at 6,396. The read-through: a crude spike layered onto an already fragile risk backdrop is enough to knock global beta lower, but the selling isn't panicked — it's positioning. Energy-heavy indices (FTSE) outperforming tech-heavy ones (Nikkei) tells the sector story cleanly.
US Futures Setup
Futures skew lower with a barbell twist. ES -0.19% at 7,707, YM -0.7% at 53,066 leading the downside, NQ +0.14% at 29,608 hanging in on chip strength, RTY -0.33% at 2,966.7. The Dow underperformance is the tell — cyclicals and industrials getting sold while semis absorb the oil shock. WTI +2.45% to $93.72 and Brent +2.2% to $98.40 are the animating force; gold -0.74% to $4,443 curiously offered despite the risk tone, suggesting dollar strength or profit-taking after recent highs. BTC $78,834 (-0.74%) confirms the light de-risking. Bias into the cash open: fade rallies unless crude cools.
Names to Watch
- ▸$USO +2.91% pre — cleanest expression of the crude move; energy complex should gap higher at the bell.
- ▸$NVDA +0.5% and $AMD +1.34% — semis bucking the tape on thin pre-open volume; watch whether strength holds once cash liquidity arrives, particularly with headlines flagging a $18.6B capex warning tied to Nvidia, Palantir, and Meta.
- ▸$META -1.0% — underperforming mega-cap; same headline overhang.
- ▸$TSLA -0.08% — Slovenia cleared FSD ahead of an EU vote; regulatory tailwind but muted pre-market reaction.
- ▸$GLD -0.89% — the gold pullback is worth tracking as a dollar/rate proxy today.
Move sizes on single names are on light pre-open flow and can compress at 9:30.
The Setup
$SPY 768.47 pre, versus prior close 770.19. Key levels: 770 is the pivot — reclaim and shorts cover; 766 is first support and roughly aligns with the ES overnight zone; a break there opens 763. Thesis for the open: sell the first rip into 770 unless WTI rolls back under $93. Energy longs ($USO, $XLE) and semi relative strength ($SMH, $NVDA) are the two trades with the cleanest overnight setup. Dow-heavy cyclicals stay on the short side of the pair.
Pre-market conditions are thin; levels and single-name moves can shift materially at the cash open. Not investment advice.
