Pre-Market Preview — Thursday, October 1, 2026

By · Independent market intelligence from Sunday Night Futures LLC

Overnight Pulse: Risk tone is mixed — tech bid, Treasuries sloppy, crude snapping higher on a Hormuz incident.

Asia & Europe

Asia split hard along the AI fault line. The Nikkei ripped +3.3% to 68,956, riding the Micron-led semi tape and a Reuters read that Asian factory activity is expanding on the "global AI boom." Hang Seng was flat at 24,613, while Indian benchmarks are reportedly staring down their longest weekly losing streak in 25 years — a notable crack in EM sentiment. Europe is the opposite story: DAX -1.41%, FTSE -1.85%, Euro Stoxx 50 -0.89%, all bleeding as the global bond rout — US 10-year reportedly at a 24-year high — tightens financial conditions and Goldman pushes its next Fed hike call to December. Rate-sensitive Europe is wearing the duration pain; AI-levered Asia is shrugging it off.

US Futures Setup

Futures lean constructive but narrow. ES 7,732.50 (+0.22%), NQ 30,878 (+0.58%) leading, YM 51,210 (-0.13%) lagging, RTY 2,817.30 (flat). The dispersion tells you everything: mega-cap tech is absorbing a hawkish rates backdrop while cyclicals and small caps can't get out of their own way with the 10-year at a generational high. Crude is the wildcard — WTI +1.46% to $91.74, Brent +2.14% to $100.13 after reports of three tankers hit by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz. Gold firm at $4,197.50, silver $61.01. Dollar bid implied by the rates move.

Today's Catalysts

Heavy 8:30 ET docket, all pending: Initial Jobless Claims (prev 198k) and Continuing Claims (prev 1.717M). Consensus prints are not verified, so treat anything that drops as directional vs. prior rather than beat/miss. 10:00 ET brings ISM Manufacturing PMI and Construction Spending — both high-impact, both without verified consensus. With the Treasury tape already dislocated and Goldman shifting its Fed call, any hot claims print or firm ISM will land on a tinder-dry rates market.

Names to Watch

  • ▸$GOOGL — up 2.16% pre-open to $351.50 on thin volume; Ackman headline flagging an Alphabet sale into "an AI stock" is making rounds.
  • ▸$NVDA — $230.50, +0.93%, riding the Micron halo and Asian AI-capex read-through.
  • ▸$AMZN — $250.81, +0.74%; Berkshire-succession headlines keep it in focus.
  • ▸$USO — $148.12, +1.64%, tracking the Hormuz tanker story; energy complex is the day's cleanest macro expression.
  • ▸$COIN — $186.78, barely green, but Citi lifting BTC/ETH forecasts is a tailwind if the tape holds.

Pre-open prints are thin; sizeable % moves can fade at the cash bell.

The Setup

$SPY $764.34 pre-market vs. prior close $762.63. Watch $762.50 as the gap-fill pivot and $760 as the line that invalidates the overnight bid. Topside, $766–767 is the resistance shelf. Thesis: fade knee-jerk strength if 10:00 ISM lands firm and yields extend — rates-sensitive breadth (IWM, DIA already red) is the tell. Hold above $762.50 through claims and tech leadership carries the index.
