Pre-Market Preview — Wednesday, October 21, 2026

By · Independent market intelligence from Sunday Night Futures LLC

Risk tone: Modestly bid into the cash open, with crude ripping and Hang Seng the clear overnight scar.

Asia & Europe

A split overnight tape. Hang Seng got hit hard, closing -2.21% at 23,651.87 — the standout weak link in Asia and worth monitoring for China-exposure spillover at the US open. Nikkei went the other way, +0.85% to 64,621.24, extending its run. Europe is constructive: DAX +0.42%, Euro STOXX 50 +0.49%, with FTSE the laggard at -0.36%. The sovereign bond story is the one to flag — French 10-year yields hit 5%, highest since 2002 per Reuters, a continental fiscal signal that hasn't yet bled into equity risk premia but deserves a seat on the desk. ECB separately struck a constructive tone on euro-zone resilience to energy shocks.

US Futures Setup

Futures lean green, led by tech. ES 7,765 (+0.13%), NQ 29,780.5 (+0.35%), YM 52,677 (-0.08%), RTY 2,781.7 (-0.19%). The split — Nasdaq bid, Dow and small-caps offered — is a clean mega-cap-tech-over-everything-else setup heading into the bell. The headline is crude: WTI +2.28% to $100.05, Brent +1.99% to $110.96, both back through psychological levels. Gold $4,138.5 (-0.1%), silver -0.93% — precious metals taking a breather after their run. Path of least resistance into the open looks like NQ leadership, with energy a wildcard overlay.

Names to Watch

  • ▸$NVDA — $219.41, +1.36% pre-market. Setting the tape for semis alongside $AMD +1.06% at $540.78. If both hold the bid at the open, QQQ gets its lift.
  • ▸$TSLA — $378.22, +1.21%. Leading mega-cap tech on thin pre-open volume; verify the move holds through the first 15 minutes before chasing.
  • ▸$MSFT — $527.40, -0.84%. The one notable mega-cap red mark; a drag on both SPY and DIA if it extends.
  • ▸$AAPL — $337.53, -0.58%. Softening alongside MSFT — watch whether the mega-cap tape is really as green as NVDA/TSLA suggest, or if leadership is narrowing.
  • ▸$USO — $163.95, +2.08%. Energy complex following crude higher; XLE names likely gap up.

Pre-open quotes are thin — size moves can fade into the first print.

The Setup

$SPY last $769.32, essentially flat on the session (+0.04%) and sitting just under recent highs. Key levels into the open:

  • ▸Resistance: $770 round number, then prior high zone
  • ▸Support: $767, then $765 as the gap-fill reference

Thesis: With NQ leading and crude running, the pain trade is a melt-up through $770 that squeezes anyone short into the OPEX hangover. But narrow leadership (NVDA/TSLA carrying, MSFT/AAPL soft) and a weak RTY argue for selling strength if SPY can't hold $770 by 10:30. Trade the tape, not the thesis.
