Overnight Pulse

Risk tone is defensive: global equities lower, crude bid, metals offered, Dow futures lagging.

Asia & Europe

Hang Seng led the selling, closing -2.36% at 23,093.37 — the standout weak print of the session and a signal that regional risk appetite cracked meaningfully. The Nikkei held up better at -0.34% (62,693.16), but Europe followed Asia lower rather than fighting it: DAX -1.81% at 25,181, FTSE 100 -0.74% at 10,673.72, Euro Stoxx 50 -0.63% at 6,048.93. The combination — HK sharp, DAX heavy, FTSE softer — reads as broad-based de-risking rather than a single-region story. With WTI pushing back above $101 overnight, European industrials and rate-sensitives had little cover. The handoff into US cash is clearly unfriendly.

US Futures Setup

Futures point to a soft open with cyclicals under the most pressure. ES 7,686.75 (-0.23%), NQ 29,133.25 (-0.03%), YM 52,757 (-0.59%), RTY 2,781.3 (-0.53%). The split is the tell: Nasdaq flat, Dow and Russell down roughly half a percent — defensive mega-caps aren't bidding, and small-caps are getting sold alongside Dow industrials. Crude is the overnight mover: $CL 101.08 (+1.62%), $BZ 109.89 (+1.13%). Gold softer at 4,039.4 (-0.52%), silver -1.96% to 53.93. Energy up, metals down, equities down — not a clean risk-off template, but not risk-on either.

Today's Catalysts

9:45 ET: S&P Global flash PMIs (Composite, Manufacturing, Services). 10:00 ET: Univ. of Michigan final sentiment and 1Y/5Y inflation expectations. Consensus and prior reference values are not confirmed in our calendar feed, so treat these as directional catalysts rather than beat/miss setups. The Michigan 5-year inflation print is the one to watch given a Fed inflation headline circulating this morning described as *"terrible news for Wall Street."*

Names to Watch

  • ▸$META -0.66% pre-market at $644.60 — flagged in overnight commentary doing *"something it's never done before"*; watch for follow-through.
  • ▸$MSFT -0.71% at $517.39 — leading mega-cap tech lower; if it can't reclaim flat, QQQ struggles.
  • ▸$NVDA +0.57% at $213.43 and $AMD +1.16% at $513.83 — semis bid against a soft tape; divergence worth tracking.
  • ▸$USO +1.69% at $165.26 — tracking the crude bid; energy names should open firm.
  • ▸$COIN +0.86% at $170.73 despite BTC at $81,680 (-0.36%) — relative strength on thin pre-open volume; fade risk if cash open brings supply.

The Setup

$SPY 762.80 pre-market, prev close 763.96. Key levels: 760 as near-term support (round number, below overnight low implied by futures), 763.96 prior close as pivot, 766 as the reclaim level that would neutralize the overnight weakness. Thesis: sell rips into 763.50–764 until SPY reclaims the prior close with volume; a failure to hold 760 opens air down to 757. PMIs at 9:45 are the first real test.
