Pre-Market Update — Wednesday, June 17, 2026
Risk-on rip into the open — Nasdaq futures up nearly 2%, S&P testing fresh highs, and crude bid as a blowout retail print rewrites the growth narrative.
The 8:30 Print
Retail Sales detonated: +6.88% MoM, a number that doesn't even need an estimate to qualify as a shock. Consumer is alive, kicking, and apparently sprinting. $NQ=F caught a vertical bid to 30,492 (+1.66%), $ES=F is +1.0% at 7,593.50, and $RTY=F is +0.83% — small caps participating, which matters. The flipside: $TNX ticked to 4.445%, $FVX to 4.176%, as the market reprices the Fed glidepath. Recall last week's CPI ran hot at 4.17% YoY with core at 2.82% and PPI at 6.42% YoY — today's print pours kerosene on the stagflation-vs-reacceleration debate. Gold $GC=F is curiously firm at $4,348.50.
Overnight Action
Asia mixed: $^N225 closed +0.72% at 69,902, but Hang Seng dumped -2.14% to 24,312 on China growth wobbles. Europe constructive — $^STOXX50E +0.36%, $^FTSE +0.52%, DAX flat at 24,865. US futures were already firm pre-print and accelerated post-8:30. $BZ=F +0.98% to $79.73 on the demand read-through; $CL=F lagging at $75.94. Crypto is the tell on risk appetite divergence — BTC -2.52% to $64,764, ETH -3.59%, SOL -4.01%. Real-rate repricing hitting digital assets harder than equities.
Movers Before the Bell
(Pre-market quotes thin and gappy — size accordingly.)
- ▸$AMD +2.56% to $520.57 — leading the chip tape, no clean single catalyst but momentum and AI-cycle bid carrying.
- ▸$AMZN +0.40% to $247.10 — Bezos comments on AI driving labor shortages making the rounds; retail print is a direct tailwind.
- ▸$NVDA +0.29% to $208.03 — quiet but green; underperforming AMD on the session.
- ▸$MSFT -0.64% / $META -0.73% / $GOOGL -0.66% — mega-cap software lagging the rip; Meta also crossing tape on reversing stance to back the Kids Online Safety Act.
- ▸$TSLA -0.93% to $400.92 — losing the $400 handle pre-market, no specific headline; rotation out of recent winners.
- ▸$COIN -1.22% to $167.21 — tracking crypto weakness.
Still Ahead Today
News flow flags $CRWD's 4-for-1 split effective July 2 — watch for retail flow chatter into the name. No high-impact US econ releases queued post-open in the calendar window. Tape will trade off retail-sales digestion and yield action through the session.
Game Plan
$SPY last $750.78, $QQQ last $733.82 with futures implying a gap-up open.
- ▸$SPY levels: resistance $753 (futures-implied open zone), support $748, then $745 gap-fill.
- ▸$QQQ levels: resistance $738, support $731, then $728.
Trade idea: Fade the first 15-minute spike only if $TNX pushes through 4.46%; otherwise buy the first pullback to VWAP. The retail print is too hot to short outright.
