Pre-Market Pulse

Risk-on bid into the open — a softer core CPI print has futures leaning green and crude getting hammered.

The 8:30 Print

Core CPI landed at 2.4% YoY, a tick below last month's 2.5%. Headline CPI held at 3.4% YoY, unchanged. No verified consensus to bench against, but the tape voted with its feet: $ES=F extended from +0.56% to +0.63% post-release, $NQ=F pushed from +0.62% to +0.75%, and $CL=F trimmed losses from -3.29% to -2.86%. Gold clawed back a bit, still red at -0.25%. The disinflation-friendly read on core is doing the heavy lifting.

Overnight Action

Asia closed heavy — Nikkei -1.93% and Hang Seng -1.86%, with Australian shares slumping to a two-month low on miner weakness. Europe flipped the script: Euro STOXX 50 +0.82%, FTSE +0.10%, DAX -0.17% mixed but constructive, helped by a UK GDP print showing the fastest growth since early 2025. US futures are firmly bid across the board: $SPY indicated +0.64% at $763.50, $QQQ +0.66% at $714.75, $DIA +0.79%, and $IWM +0.55% — small caps participating. Crude is the standout casualty: WTI -2.86% to $99.55, Brent -2.80% to $104.62.

Movers Before the Bell

  • ▸$META +1.34% to $653.31 — leading mega-cap tape, no single catalyst but AI capex narrative continues to bid the name.
  • ▸$MSFT +0.74% to $496.95 and $AMZN +0.66% to $253.95 — hyperscaler complex firm; Motley Fool piece flagging Jassy moves as bullish for $MU and $AVGO is reinforcing the AI-infrastructure trade.
  • ▸$USO -3.27% to $153.21 — tracking the crude flush; energy longs on notice.
  • ▸$NVDA +0.28% and $AMD +0.48% — semis constructive but lagging the broader QQQ bid, worth watching for catch-up bid at the open.
  • ▸$COIN -0.10% to $174 despite $ETH +2.22% overnight — crypto proxies not confirming the token strength; $BTC flat at $77,416.

Note: pre-open volume is thin — outsized moves here can and do fade into the cash open.

Still Ahead Today

The 8:30 CPI complex was the main event on the calendar. No additional verified high-impact US releases flagged for the session. Watch the tape's ability to hold the post-CPI gains through the first hour — that's the real tell on whether the disinflation read gets faded or extended.

Game Plan

$SPY indicated at $763.50 (+0.64%).

  • ▸Resistance: $765 round number, then prior highs above.
  • ▸Pivot: $760 — the pre-CPI shelf; losing it flips tone.
  • ▸Support: $757.83 prior close.

Trade idea: Long bias while $SPY holds $760. Fade any spike into $765 that isn't confirmed by $QQQ making a new session high. Crude weakness is a tailwind for consumer names — watch for rotation into $XLY/$IWM if breadth expands.
