Prediction: Rocket Lab Will Turn Profitable and Free-Cash-Flow-Positive in 2027 -- Thanks to Iridium
Rocket Lab (RKLB) announced an $8 billion acquisition of satellite operator Iridium, with the deal expected to close in mid-2027. The combined entity is projected to achieve profitability and positive free cash flow by 2027, with analysts forecasting $137 million in earnings and $425 million in free cash flow for that year.
The acquisition transforms Rocket Lab from a pure-play launch provider into a vertically integrated space company. The combined business will offer satellite communications, positioning/navigation/timing services, and IoT connectivity—segments where SpaceX currently has limited exposure. Iridium operates a constellation of low-Earth-orbit satellites providing global voice and data coverage, adding recurring revenue streams to Rocket Lab's launch services.
The $8 billion price tag represents a significant bet on vertical integration in the commercial space sector. Rocket Lab will control both the manufacturing and launch of satellites as well as the end-user services those satellites provide. The mid-2027 timeline gives the company roughly two and a half years to execute the integration and deliver on the profitability targets.
