Rocket Lab Just Booked Its Biggest Contract Ever (Again)
RKLB added its fifth major contract of 2026: Japanese customer Synspective ordered 20 additional launches, lifting its total order to 47 launches worth roughly $168 million. The missions run from 2028 through 2031 and push RKLB's backlog beyond $840 million.
The contract is the headline, but the guidance is the counterweight. RKLB postponed the first launch of its Neutron reusable rocket to 2027. The company also does not expect profitability until 2027, even factoring in the pending Iridium acquisition.
Interpretation: the order book is expanding faster than the earnings picture is improving. A backlog above $840 million with deliveries stretching to 2031 gives revenue visibility, but the 2027 timelines for both Neutron and profitability mean that visibility converts to cash slowly. The Synspective deal alone averages out to a few million dollars per launch across 47 missions, a steady cadence rather than a step-change in near-term revenue.
Five major contracts in 2026 shows the commercial pipeline is not the problem. The open questions sit on execution and timing: whether Neutron holds its new 2027 date and whether the Iridium deal closes and delivers the profitability path management has outlined.
