Rocket Lab Just Won Another Massive Government Contract
Rocket Lab (RKLB) landed a $397 million fixed-price contract from the U.S. Space Force to build, launch, and operate military satellites under the SB-AMTI program. The award represents the company's largest defense contract this year and signals expanding Pentagon confidence in Rocket Lab as a national security launch provider alongside SpaceX.
The contract hinges on the successful development and deployment of Neutron, Rocket Lab's medium-lift rocket. Neutron has experienced multiple delays and is currently scheduled for a Q4 launch. The fixed-price structure means any cost overruns during development or deployment will hit Rocket Lab's bottom line directly, amplifying execution risk as the company scales its defense business.
The Space Force deal adds to Rocket Lab's growing government portfolio, reinforcing its position in the national security space sector. However, the $397 million award carries meaningful margin pressure if Neutron's development costs escalate or the Q4 timeline slips further.
