Samsung May Report Its First 100 Trillion Won Quarter. Micron Stock Has More to Lose Than to Gain.

Samsung is expected to post its first quarterly operating profit above 100 trillion won, with consensus sitting near 106.94 trillion won. The Motley Fool's read: MU has more to lose than gain from the print.

The setup is asymmetric. A big beat is largely priced into that consensus figure. A miss, however, would raise the possibility that memory pricing has stalled, a direct concern for MU's guidance.

The pricing data supports the caution. MU's DRAM prices rose in the high-teens percentage last quarter, a sharp deceleration from low-60s gains the quarter before. Interpretation: the rate of change in the memory pricing boom is fading, even if absolute prices remain elevated. When growth decelerates that fast, markets tend to scrutinize any signal that the cycle is peaking, and Samsung's results are a read-through on exactly that.

Put differently, a Samsung number at or modestly above 106.94 trillion won likely confirms what's already known. A shortfall would suggest the slowdown seen in MU's DRAM pricing may be deepening rather than stabilizing.
