Shopify Stock Just Plunged. Here's Why I'm Not Selling
SHOP fell 10% after its Q3 report, as a slight GMV miss overshadowed fundamentals that otherwise looked strong.
Gross merchandise volume grew 29%, below the higher figure the market anticipated. Subscription revenue also came in short of expectations. Those two misses drove the selloff, not any weakness in the broader results.
The rest of the print was robust. Revenue grew 32%, operating income jumped 66%, and free cash flow reached $816M. A company posting those numbers and still dropping double digits shows how little room the market left for error.
The Motley Fool author is holding his position, framing the decline as an overreaction to near-perfect valuation expectations rather than fundamental deterioration. That is his view, and it rests on the gap between the headline growth figures and the narrow nature of the misses.
Interpretation: a 10% drop on a small GMV shortfall suggests positioning, not business damage, was the main driver. Whether that reading holds depends on whether growth stays near the 29% to 32% range in coming quarters.
