Stock Market Today, Oct. 22: CoreWeave Slides on Bernstein Downgrade and Financing Worries
CoreWeave (CRWV) dropped 10.06% to $55.60 after Bernstein analyst Madison Rezaei slashed her price target to $51 from $74, a 31% cut that now sits roughly 8% below the closing price.
The downgrade centers on financing risk. Rezaei estimates CoreWeave needs about $85 billion to fund its committed backlog. That figure turns the debate from demand to capital: can the company raise enough money, on acceptable terms, to deliver what customers have already contracted?
The sell-off drew pushback from two heavyweight voices. Nvidia (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang and Blackstone (BX) COO Jon Gray both praised the strength of underlying demand for AI compute capacity, and both spoke well of CoreWeave's management. Those comments address demand and execution, but neither addresses Bernstein's financing math directly.
Interpretation: the market is pricing the funding gap, while the bulls are pointing to demand. Both can be true at once. A backlog is only worth what the balance sheet can build, and the $85 billion estimate puts the capital question at the center of the stock's near-term direction.
The Huang and Gray comments give dip buyers a narrative, but Bernstein's $51 target sits below the $55.60 close, so the sell-side case for further downside remains on the table.
