Tesla and Other Electric Vehicle Companies Begin Massive China Recall
Tesla faces a recall of nearly 3 million vehicles in China—part of a 4 million-unit action across nine automakers—over electric door handles that may trap occupants during emergencies. The recall covers TSLA's Model 3, Y, S, and X. Chinese regulators flagged incidents where concealed door handle failures prevented escape from vehicles.
The fix involves warning labels and software updates as interim measures. China will ban concealed door handles outright starting in 2027, forcing a hardware redesign for future models. The recall scope represents a material portion of Tesla's installed base in its second-largest market.
XIACF, ZGJLY, and XPEV are among the eight other automakers recalling vehicles under the same directive, though their individual unit counts were not disclosed.
