Tesla and SpaceX Committed $16.8 Billion to One Chip Plant. Tesla's Entire Annual Profit Is $3.8 Billion.
Tesla and SpaceX have committed $16.8 billion to Terafab, a semiconductor manufacturing plant in Texas. The first-phase investment is more than four times Tesla's $3.8 billion annual profit, marking one of the largest capital commitments in the automaker's history relative to its earnings power.
The facility will manufacture chips for Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots and Cybercab autonomous vehicles, plus SpaceX's planned space-based data centers. Tesla holds sufficient cash reserves to fund its portion of the project, but the revenue streams from Optimus and Cybercab remain unproven—neither product has entered commercial production.
The scale of the commitment relative to Tesla's current profitability raises questions about capital allocation and return timelines. At $3.8 billion in annual net income, Tesla would need to dedicate more than four years of total profit to cover just its share of the initial investment, assuming no other capital demands.
