The Trump Boom Could Soon End as the Bond Market Flashes a Stark Warning to Stock Investors

The 10-year Treasury yield has climbed to 5.2% while the S&P 500 trades at a CAPE ratio of 41.9, a combination that is pressuring the equity risk premium even as stocks sit 14% higher year-to-date.

The rally has run under President Trump's pro-business policies. But the same policy mix is now feeding the bond side of the ledger: tariffs, inflation, and deficit spending are all cited as drivers pushing interest rates higher.

Here is the squeeze. At a 41.9 CAPE, investors are paying a steep multiple for equity earnings. At a 5.2% 10-year yield, Treasuries offer a meaningful return with far less valuation risk. Interpretation: when a government bond pays more than 5% and stocks look this expensive, the relative case for equities weakens, and the argument for rotating capital from stocks into bonds strengthens.

The 14% year-to-date gain shows how much optimism is already priced in. Higher yields raise the hurdle rate for that optimism to keep paying off. Treasury-focused exposure such as GOVT sits on the other side of this trade, benefiting from the same yield levels that threaten equity multiples.
